WE ARE LEGION

We are volunteers assigned to an irregular Peshmerga unit consisting of Westerners.
The unit consists of former military men who have taken a stance against the tyranny that is the Islamic State and the unthinkable acts of cruelty that has set upon the Kurdish people in Iraqi Kurdistan.
As veterans from different militaries from more than five nations we possess a vast variety of military skill sets which we have used to transform ourselves from a group of men with a common aim into a battle proven unit that is held in high regard within the Peshmerga.

ABOUT US

As volunteers, there is no pay other than knowing you are acting on behalf of a just cause. We Legionaries have left behind our homes, wives and children along with jobs and the comforts of western living in an effort to help stem the spread of the Islamic State.

PESHMERGA ORIGIN

The Kurdish warrior tradition has existed for thousands of years along with aspirations for independence, and early Kurdish warriors fought against the various Persian empires, the Ottoman Empire and the British Empire.

ISLAMIC STATE

The Islamic State is a global threat. From its beginnings in Iraq, to its spread to Syria, the Islamic State hasorchestrated terror attacks against citizens of the USA, Europe and Africa; as well as the attempted genocide of the indigenous people of this region.

PESHMERGA OF TODAY

The Peshmerga of today has been internationally recognized as the only legitimate defense force of Kurdistan. As a result, NATO countries such as Germany have moved to arm the Peshmerga directly and have shipped some 1900 tons of weaponry to date.

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION

If you are interested in volunteering, please read all the information below to ensure you meet the minimum criteria before sending a message on the contact page.

INTRODUCTION

As ex-Armed forces personnel, we have the skills and experience to fight against the Islamic State. We will declare our allegiance to the people of Kurdistan where unspeakable human suffering has been inflicted by ISIS. Our Values, Commitment to the cause: discipline, honesty, loyalty, and respect for all. We will adhere to all conventions and laws applicable to armed conflict. We will adhere to all laws and honour all customs of Kurdistan. We seek to protect the people of Kurdistan and to defeat ISIS. As Western volunteers, we will have no religious affiliation, nor will it condemn any other religion. We will hold no stance regarding the Syrian Revolution or the Assad regime. We do not seek to make material gains from our service. Our aim is to support Kurdish operations against ISIS by utilizing the skill sets and wealth of experience our volunteers can bring to the conflict. Our objective is clear: to Capture or Destroy

REQUIREMENTS

1 Effective communication in the English language.
2 Former Military (operational tours a benefit but not essential).
3 A willingness and capability to be trained in basic mix of coalition infantry tactics.
4 A basic military fitness level, with no existing medical conditions requiring prescribed drug dependency.
5 An offer of commitment for at least 12 weeks (with a 4 week probationary period)
6 Capability to self-fund transport to operational theatre and preparations for an exit strategy.
7 Finance your own kit and equipment. ($200 a month for personal upkeep/spending)
8 A clear understanding of the Peshmerga and their command structure.
9 A clear understanding of the situation in Kurdistan and ISIS.
10 Be prepared to join a front line unit.

Whilst we are a volunteer force and fully understand that any man willing to lay down his own life in the protection of others is an asset, we must ensure the integrity of our unit therefore must exclude any individual that has criminal convictions for the following offences:

- Offences of a sexual nature.
- Convictions for class A substances.
- Convictions for theft or robbery.

CRITERIA

If you are wanting to travel to Kurdistan and be part of the Peshmerga as a western volunteer then there are a few requirements that you must meet so that we may help you. These have been put in place so that you are fully aware and prepared for what you are volunteering for. Firstly you are a Volunteer and therefore are in no way, shape or form being recruited. As a volunteer you are free to leave at any time, including when in country. As a volunteer there is no form of payment for your services, nor is there any form of compensation if you are injured or killed. As a volunteer you must be able to finance your own flights to Kurdistan and then back to your home country. Also, you must be able to buy your own kit/equipment and have enough money for your day-to-day living costs (all that will be provided by the Peshmerga is a very basic food and board). Even though you are a volunteer, there is still a military structure in both the Peshmerga and within the western volunteers. Please be aware that as a volunteer you are joining as a basic soldier regardless of your rank and trade within the military. Once in country your skill sets will be evaluated and put to use if possible. YOU WILL BE PLACED ON THE FRONT LINES AND SEE COMBAT.

BASIC KIT LIST

Upon arrival, you will only be issued a weapon and ammunition; therefore you are required to procure your own kit and equipment.

Below is a very basic list of kit:
• Plate carrier
• Front/Rear plates - Level 3 or 4 PLATES & BODY ARMOUR CAN BE PURCHASED IN COUNTRY FOR U.S. TRAVELERS
• Two pairs of good boots
• At least two pairs of MTP uniform
THE REASON FOR MTP IS SO THAT EVERYONE HAS THE SAME UNIFORM.
• An MTP bush/boonie hat or Cap
• At least two UBACS
• 6 pairs of 100% cotton boxer shorts
• 8 pairs of good boot socks
• Some basic down time clothes
• Some PT gear
• Lightweight sleeping bag
• Wash kit
• Foot care kit
• Personal med kit (there is a market where you can buy kit and equipment but it's best to bring what you can with you)
• Camelback with carrier
• Weapons cleaning kit
